Tesfaye Urgessa
Ethiopia, b. 1983
Urgessa’s paintings place expressive human figures within densely constructed spaces. Bodies, objects and fragments of interiors come together in compositions that feel both intimate and unsettled, with narratives that resist a single reading. His work offers physical presence and emotional complexity for a collector drawn to ambitious figuration. Selected for Ethiopia’s inaugural national pavilion at the 2024 Venice Biennale, he has brought international attention to a distinctive contemporary Ethiopian painting practice.
